This listing is for a vintage Monumental Burmese Kalaga Tapestry From
Appleton Museum of Art measuring about 60 1/2 inches by 126 inches , weighing
about 26 lbs. net.
Kalaga is the traditional name for embroidered tapestries done entirely by
hand from Myanmar (Burma).
The ancient kalagas were made for the royal palaces.
It is intricately embroidered using sequins, glass beads and such, braids,
metallic and other threads on black velvet, silk or cotton. I would not be
surprised if precious metals like silver and gold were used in the couched /
embroidered work.
Padded areas have about one inch depth. 34 roundels make up the border , and
I think 31 ( count not verified but close to 31 if not 31 ) figures inside
border , of People , Prince , Carriage , Elephant , Throne , Soldiers? Floral
Details.....
These are scenes from the ancient epic Hindu poem, the Ramayana, or from
Buddhist mythology. Every bit of the finished piece is covered so you can
imagine that a large piece could take months or even years to make.
Top back has a strip of white cotton fabric sewn on the back which I guess
was used to hang the piece.
Museum Inventory Number is written on a piece of cotton fabric and sewn on
the lower back.
In excellent as shown condition. A total of I think 16 pink and clear glass
beads have come off ( off of probably thousands ) , which was attached in a
small plastic bag to the tapestry , which I will ship along.
Overall it is pretty clean with exception of minor sweating on back side from
hanging.
I have just lightly vacuumed this piece while in my possession.
It will be shipped folded as shown and boxed for shipment.
