The Hours of James IV of Scotland are a book of hours
manuscript
illuminated
dating from the first quarter of xvie
century , kept at the Austrian National Library
of  Vienna (Austria) . He was executed for the king James IV of Scotland
and his wife  Marguerite Tudor .
The manuscript was commissioned between 1503, date of the marriage between the king James IV of Scotland
and Marguerite Tudor
daughter ofHenry VII of England  and 1513, the date of the king's death, since both are represented there in portrait. It was undoubtedly commissioned by the king to make it a wedding gift to his wife : several decorative elements are found in the official document of the marriage contract of the two spouses (Public Record Office
E39 / 81) and several clues were only comprehensible to the Scottish court. The book was one of the many gifts and festivities offered on the occasion of an alliance supposed to seal peace between theScotland  and theEngland .
The manuscript is bequeathed to Marie tudor
Marguerite's sister. It is acquired by Leopold I of the Holy Empire
to xviie
century , and thus enters the Imperial Habsburg Library. It is still kept at the Austrian National Library
The manuscript contains 19 full-page miniatures, 46 small miniatures and 2  historiated drop caps , but also illuminated borders on each page, 9 of which are historiated. It also contains 12 calendar pages decorated with an architectural decoration containing small scenes as well as uninhabited landscapes in the lower part..
Only two miniatures are attributed to the Master of James IV of Scotland, which owes its name to this manuscript, whose work was collected by the German art historian Friedrich Winkler. This artist is generally identified with  Gerard Horenbout . These are the portrait of James IV (f.24v) and the Flight into Egypt (f.104v). The other paintings are the work of his studio or other unidentified secondary artists.
Jacques IV (Seumas IV in Scottish Gaelic
James IV in English
born the March 17

and dead the September 9

is king of scotland
from 1488 until his death.
Son of the king Jacques III
and of  Margaret of Denmark
he ascended the throne at the age of fifteen. After twenty-five years of reign, he was defeated and killed by the English
to the Battle of Flodden Field . He is the last British monarch to die in action.
Marguerite Tudor, born 28 november   1489  to Palace of Westminster
and died on October 18
1541
at Methven Castle, was the eldest of the two surviving daughters ofHenri VII from England
and D'Elizabeth of York
and the older sister ofHenri VIII . In 1503 she was married to Jacques IV
King of Scots, which was to make her the mother of Jacques V
and the grandmother of Marie stuart .
The Master of James IV of Scotland, a most talented and prominent illuminator from the decades bookending the year 1500, was named after his work in this very Book of Hours. This extravagant manuscript was likely made as a gift for the king of Scotland and Margaret Tudor around the time of their 1503 wedding, and certainly prior to King James' death in 1513. The marriage marked a significant political union that was meant to ensure lasting peace between Scotland and England.
The Book of Hours of James IV contains a rather standard compilation of texts in Latin to constitute a Book of Hours. The images, however, are personalized with heraldic references to both families and remarkable portraits of the newlyweds. Sixty-five full-page miniatures fill this personal book and are used to ceremoniously announce the beginning of a new section or highlight a prominent portion.
Bold borders filled with realistic flowers (prominently featuring marguerites in honor of the English bride), creatures, elaborate architectural elements, and more frame each of these lively miniatures along with their textual counterpart across the openings. The vivid array of tempera colors is opulently highlighted with shell gold throughout, creating a masterpiece worthy of celebrating a royal union.
Franz Unterkircher (1904-1989)
