Description (ph19)
Inspired by Chateaubriand's trip to the Americas, this short story - or this
poem as he calls it - washis first literary success and not without reasons.
Atala or the loves of two savages in the desert, like Romeo and Juliet, has the
same dramatic force and the narration of this short happiness, marked by
fatality, excited the young romantic generation seduced by the exoticism of
Indian customs.
Planned to appear as part of Chateaubriand's Génie du Christianisme but
published separately, along with René, Atala is intended to illustrate his
praise of Christianity.
Chactas and Atala love each other… But they belong to enemy tribes and, if
Atala decides, ultimately, to flee with Chactas into the forest, there are
other obstacles to their happiness… Refugees in Father Aubry's community, they
do not will be able to prevent fate despite the beneficial influence of the
missionary.

François-René, viscount from

July
1848
is a writer
memorialist
and politician
French
He is considered one of the precursors
of french romanticism
and one of the biggest names in the French literature
From the nobility Breton , the most
famous member of his family
native Saint Malo
Chateaubriand is politically part
of the movement royalist . Several
times ambassador with various
sovereigns, he is appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs
from 1822 to 1824 under the Restoration
and account,
under the reign of Charles X , from
ultraroyalists . The many
political and diplomatic responsibilities that mark his career as well as his
taste for travel, in America then in the Mediterranean Basin
structure a
life marked byexile and the nostalgia for
stability.
His first major publications, theEssay on revolutions
1796) and the
Genius of Christianity
1802), demonstrate
his political commitment at the time in favor of counter-revolution
and in defense of Ancien
Régime company
But
the ideological question very quickly becomes intertwined with the promotion of
an original aesthetic which achieves great popular and literary success. : the
description of the nature and the
analysis of the feelings of the " I
which he uses in
fictions Atala (1801) and Rein
1802), first published as
illustrations of the theses of Genie then attached to the vast romantic cycle
of Natchez (fully published in
1826), make it a model for the next generation of French writers. His
propensity for mystery, for amplitude, for emphasis, for melancholy grandeur,
his attempt to express unspeakable suffering and his thirst forexoticism
which he reaffirms in the account of
his trip to the Mediterranean Route from Paris to Jerusalem
1811 ), earned him to
be considered a posteriori as one of " pre-romantic
most influential of his
generation. The painful sensitivity of this " wave of passions
illustrated through the
character of René, knows an important posterity in the french romanticism
the " evil of the
century
of Musset where the " spleen
of Baudelaire
can be considered, among
other things, as distant avatars.
Atala, or The Loves of Two Savages in the Desert is a novel
published in 1801
by thewriter
French
François-René de Chateaubriand
Atala earned him his first real literary success.
Chateaubriand's novel is in fact a praise of Christianity through the
adventures of Chactas saved by the virgin Atala. The meeting of Father Aubry
and his small community serves this magnificence while defending the savages
whose manners can be softened thanks to the true Christian faith, it is a novel
whose outline, the scenario, most resembles a diagram of tragedy.
