Antique French Carved Oak Cabinet Breton Bagpipe Brittany Petite Bookcase

Tall and slender antique French cabinet, with very unique Breton carvings!~
The most outstanding feature is the large, dimensionally carved door panel that depicts a Breton man playing a “biniou”, which is a Breton bagpipe!  Carvings are rich with details, note the gentleman’s traditional period dress, including hat to boots, as well as his facial features as he blows on the biniou.  Overhead are carved leaves amongst the tree limbs and a village church in the background.~
Scalloped trim to the corners below the door.  Lower open display area
has carved medallion to the back panel and more scalloped trim below.~

The Celtic roots of the Brittany region of France are manifest in the furniture produced in this region. The Breton style is as distinctive as its special culture and easily recognizable due to it’s very ornate carvings.  A hallmark feature is the symbolic use of men and women in traditional Celtic dress to represent a strong work ethic, piety, and the enjoyment of life. The local economy in Brittany was heavily dependent on fishing and maritime activities, so one often finds circles and ship's wheels as a common decorative motif. Typically the furniture is carved out of chestnut or oak, with a dark finish.
